HOW WE PRAY
Sandee Macgregor / February 26, 2021
It’s doubtful my grandma had an official reading plan much like we have access to today. Likely it would have been a simple daily habit of reading the word, making notes in the margins and underlining key verses and words while bringing her world into prayerful song.
To go back and sit at her kitchen table while eating a gingersnap cookie she was famous for as she unfolded the pages of her Bible, would be a gift. I would like to take my kids to her table. Even though that is not possible I can share her legacy of prayer, bake gingersnap cookies and open my Bible. There is always a way. The most wonderful thing I can do is bring them to the feet of Jesus through prayer. I can also continue to bring them to my mom’s table! Through the years my kids have the blessing of knowing they are prayed for, including special grammy goodies while spending time together. We have the opportunity to continue a legacy or begin one! Prayer changes lives. I am grateful for the countless moments my grandma spent lifting up generations to the Lord.

One of my mom’s dearest friends was commissioned to paint this photo. Between my mom and her siblings, they shared the original painting. It would hang in their hallways as a reminder of the true heart of Nellie – a praying wife, mother and friend. When I think of her, I find my mind is less likely to lean toward words like complicated or incapable. In Matthew 6 we are reminded how to pray,
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This, then, is how you should pray:
My hope is that this picture lives on for generations to come as a beautiful reminder how we pray.

"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."

Thank you for this nostalgic and inviting reminder to either start or continue being prayer warriors for ourselves and family. The Lord’s Prayer give us the words to pray as well as many others also in the Bible. The song by Steve Green I’ve just listened to-‘May all who come behind us find us faithful. Footprints to lead the way…’ God help us with those beside us. Find us on our knees Lord.??
