Unexpected moments, planned opportunities
Sandee Macgregor / July 25, 2020
It doesn’t happen often but when it does it is magical: time alone with one of your children. Over the years I have made the effort to spend time alone with each child, even if it means a trip to the grocery store. Every moment has an unique opportunity for bonding. Conversations in the car have been some of the best and hardest. With eyes forward and ease of words flowing amidst the background music, heart-felt moments become a blessed reality. Trust me, not every conversation is ground breaking or life- giving. Still it is time together even if the only words heard are from the artist on the playlist.
Recently, I had the opportunity to be alone with my youngest daughter. We played games, shopped for her favourite snacks (and some for me), watched Hamilton and other movies, swimming, laughing, walking, and the most important one, talking and listening. It was time to dig deeper into understanding more about the changes on the horizon for this young one! I did not know we were going to do this, but because I had already been there a few time before and had used the following video series. I had an unexpected moment with a planned opportunity. We grabbed blankets, pillows, some seriously decadent chocolate and watched, read the discussion questions (so helpful), looked up links to hairstyles to first bras (check out https://www.yellowberrycompany.com/ ) and enjoyed being together in the hammock, just us.
Here a short introduction video. I love it when Sheila says that,”This is a resource not a replacement.” I completely agree that anything you choose to watch or read with your children should be a stepping stone to further discussion with you. Plopping a book down and saying read this or pushing play and saying watch this without you is only going to potentially create distance with these types of conversations. There will be many questions and offering your time and love can’t be replaced. I did not do this perfectly with my children, I did my best at the time and now with my last one I am determined to make it better! I must mention they also have a video for boys.
The Whole Story For Girls – VIP Package
Your children may be young, but why not begin researching now so when that unexpected moment arrives you have the planned opportunity ready to go! Perhaps you feel that you did not do well in this area. Give yourself some grace and be honest with your child and begin in a new way. Take her out alone and just share your heart and allow that to be the beginning of a safe place to share questions and listen. Remember, give yourself grace. I am preaching to myself, we all need it while parenting.
Here are a couple of other helpful resources: God’s Design for Sex Series, 4 Books, Revised & Updated Edition
I have not seen the revised edition, I have the original set. Great to sit and read together.
True Girl has some excellent resource as well. Be sure to check out their site and blog. I have used many of her bible studies and books. Dannah Gresh is passionate about teaching young women about the Lord. She has many books that you will want to add to your library!

What resource have you used in your home?
"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."
