I have many treasured memories of when my kids were younger, reading about heroes of the faith from various books. These were special moments where we would sit down together before we began opening the math books, and we would learn about some incredible people with a strong faith foundation who genuinely changed the world! I constantly searched for solid books that shared true stories of men and women who honoured the Lord with their gifts and talents despite incredible hardships. One of these people we read about was Eric Liddell. His story is a testament to the power of faith, overcoming adversity, and commitment to God, even in the face of many challenges.
I am so grateful that author and blogger Tim Challies has a new graphic novel, Eric’s Greatest Race—The Inspiring True Story of Eric Liddell, Athlete, Missionary, Prisoner. This graphic novel beautifully illustrates Eric Liddell’s life, from his early days as an athlete to his later years as a missionary and prisoner, all the while maintaining his unwavering faith.
If you’ve ever had the opportunity to watch the incredible movie Chariots of Fire, you know who this amazing man was! Eric’s faith allowed him to serve God profoundly, leaving a lasting legacy. With his well-known eloquence, Tim reveals the story through creative and powerful written words and detailed and powerful illustrations by Paul Mignard. It is sure to grab the reader’s attention!
Graphic novels are an excellent way to encourage reading, and when combined with a powerful story of faith, they are a winner! I recall one of my kids struggling with reading when young, and this would have been a welcome addition many years ago! I am confident this book will be well-loved by countless readers, with many grateful parents!
I appreciate the attention to historical details, particularly how he handles the topic of communism on pages 94-95. The way Tim engages the reader through Eric’s devotion to his family is very thoughtful, revealing so much about Eric’s character. Tim writes about the challenging decision not to run on a Sunday that invokes a challenge for the reader to put God first! Page 84 shares the four absolutes Eric determined to hold fast to: absolute honesty, absolute unselfishness, absolute purity and absolute love. How different the world would be if we all held onto these absolutes!
It’s just in time to add it to your kids’ summer reading list. And parents, you will want to read this, too! By reading this book together, you can discuss the powerful lessons of faith and perseverance! Thank you, Tim, for writing this book with young readers in mind!
Maybe Friday night movie night will include Chariots of Fire! It was nominated for multiple Oscars and won four! That is our movie tonight! (You should know it is my husbands all time fav movie!)
"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."
