Linking Arms

Sandee Macgregor / May 7, 2025

Linking arms—isn’t that what we do as Moms? I think back to one of the very first moms’ play groups. It was called Gymboree. Four of my kids had the opportunity to explore this excellent play program, except my youngest. It was interactive, fun, and a fantastic way to meet other moms! These were my early years of linking arms with other moms.

What does linking arms mean? The visual is clear: you connect to the person beside you by linking arms. You are side-by-side and walk together. When you’re linking arms with someone, you’re holding them, you can be with them and pick them up. It means you’re on the same page; you’re not against them. As moms today, I think there could be a tendency to be in competition and linking arms isn’t the first strategy. It’s almost awkward.

I think back to the very first class I went to at Gymboree. My mom came with me, and I had my first baby boy, he was maybe two or three months old, and as much as it’s for the baby, it’s really for you, the mom! You get to get up and get out, meet people, and that’s when I first met a dear friend. We went out for coffee and have been friends for almost 26 years! If I had just chosen to stay home, I would’ve missed the opportunity to meet her! We have been linking arms ever since, through all of life‘s hills and valleys, our challenging parenting moments and more.

Who are you linking arms with? What leap of faith are you taking today to create the community you desperately need? We all need it. Life is too hard to do it all alone. We are meant to be united, peaceful, and walk with one another. Find someone to link arms with. Don’t forget that linking arms begins right at home. Linking arms with your spouse and kids helps set the foundation beyond your walls. I think that’s what I loved so much about homeschooling: we walked together as one, and we spent our days together doing the mundane and the boring, the exciting, the hard, the thrilling and the enchanting. It was beautiful, and yes, homeschooling was hard. Anything worth doing is going to be hard!
I’m so thankful for the women who link arms with me. I’m so grateful for my husband. We walk together side-by-side, linking arms, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus as best we can.

"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."
