Grit and Grace = Graduation!
Sandee Macgregor / April 30, 2023
Reflecting on the Heritage College and Seminary graduation weekend, I remember two key words that resonate: grit and grace. Since September 2021, I have spent countless hours researching, reading, writing, sharing, discussing, creating, thinking to myself and speaking my thoughts to willing listeners (bless you!). Each class attended, book read, assignment submitted, presentation accomplished, lecture viewed, discussion post posted and article researched pushed me to be a more informed learner, gracious listener, careful compiler, intentional researcher, meticulous editor and willing participant.
My professor (along with others along the way that taught us as well) purposefully challenged me to be more of who God has called me to be. I have read through many notes from assignments that have encouraged me and provided areas of growth I knew were stunted, but I needed someone to open my heart, mind and soul to suggestions that would push me further. I have heard gracious commending words that have encouraged my doubtful soul. I was mentored by a godly professor that determined to draw out my strengths and encourage the areas that needed growth. She did just that and more with love, gentleness, and grace. Her prayerfulness through my coursework was a welcome gift. She was available, kind, and intentional, boldly proclaiming her love for Christ consistently and beautifully. I am grateful!
One of my fellow graduates spoke at the ceremony and reminded us that no one completed degrees or certificates alone, not one! We have all had others cheering us on, guiding our steps, and listening with caring, attentive ears and willing hearts. He encouraged us not to frame our certificate and mount it on the wall for our glory but for God’s glory. He suggested the inner matte be signed by those in your life so when you look at your framed certificate on the wall, you see all those names and, with gratitude, think of them and how you accomplished so much with all of them at your side.
We did this at our wedding back in 1996. When our guests entered the church, they were met with a sweet friend, and she directed them to sign the frame that would eventually surround our wedding photo. Over the years, I have loved looking back at the names as a beautiful reminder of those who were there that day, supporting and encouraging us as we entered this new stage of life.
Grit and grace are two significant words that describe my academic journey. It has ended, but my learning and striving to learn more about God and what unfolds from Genesis to Revelation will continue.
Also, I have many books to read that I intentionally shelved and plan to begin reading! I have already listened to two on audio (Gay Girl, Good God by Jackie Hill Perry and Undistracted by Bob Goff – both excellent and I will add reviews soon).

"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."

Love the pics, the memories you wrote, and our opportunity to be there to share in it . How special your kids could all share this unusual opportunity to attend their own mom’s moment! And be inspired to keep on their path to completion. You worked so hard, at times found it hard, but didn’t give up, found the strength He promised and we prayed for. A big YES dear daughter. Again our hearty and loving CONGRATULATIONS to you. And to Dunc and your family for their support 💝
So grateful for you mom thank you!
