Improbable Connections -Review
Sandee Macgregor / December 16, 2020
Covering the vast expanse of the ocean anytime is still an incredible accomplishment. Boarding a cruise ship is a luxurious way to explore the new and unknown. The Mayflower, however, was in no way a vacation with 24/7 buffets, exciting shows, poolside margaritas and towel service. As detailed beautifully by Ron Germaine, the brave group of separatist sought to have a life beyond England and preserve their faith and strong convictions. Those convictions surrounded them on the tumultuous journey that took the lives of many brave men, women and children. An unknown time frame, months at sea with little to eat but hardtack, salt pork, fish and only beer to drink along with little to no privacy or room to breathe. This barely carried them through the voyage. Ron Germaine eloquently describes the fear, mourning from desperate loss and utter listlessness the passengers experienced. Upon arrival this courageous group settled into a new home and fell into step with the surrounding Natives Americans. What is so endearing is the imagined relationship between two young girls that I believe carries the brilliant telling of the Mayflower story. Improbable Connections is not only recommended, it is advised that the whole family read this together out loud. It can be easily accomplished as it is a smooth and easy read. I appreciated how he intertwined so masterfully the real historical characters and fictional. This allows the imagination to explore what could have been alongside of what really was. Here is the most fantastic part to share, the author is my Uncle! To you Uncle Ron, thank you for crafting this book for all of us to read. I particularly love that you included Grandma (your mom) Nellie Germaine in the acknowledgements, the one that planted the seed for this book. I echo the seeds she planted, she too is one that has influenced me greatly. This is a five star book. If you know me and live close to me please feel free to borrow this wonderful novel!
Congratulations Uncle Ron, this is a great accomplishment that will draw many readers into a critical aspect to the beginning of a nation.
Here is what my two youngest are saying:
“It was an adventurous story and inspired me to write my own. I recommend this book, especially someone to read it out loud to you. I couldn’t imagine being thrown off the ship like one of the passengers named John. He was standing on top of the ship, it was rough seas and a wave washed him off. It was so rough and couldn’t handle the current, but a rope saved his life and they pulled him back in! I loved the book and hope it inspires others too” (Katie, age 9).
“The book Improbable Connections was a very interesting book, it was full of fun and many adventures, but it was also quite sad because so many people lost their lives on the Mayflower. I found it so amazing how two completely different girls could be come best friends, even though they spoke different languages! I also liked how they never lost hope and never gave up. Improbable Connections was an amazing book! I highly recommend this book. Thank you to my great uncle Ron for writing such a fantastic book” (Sara age 13).

"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."

Wow so beautifully, genuinely expressed to whet everyone’s appetite to read this book Sandee and also from your girls . I’d be over the moon if I was U. Ron.
Yes, I’m over the moon with Sandee’s and her girls’ comments – and very grateful!
I hope many read it and enjoy like we did!
