Loss of a Friend: Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing repost review of Matthew Perry’s Memoir
Sandee Macgregor / October 29, 2023
I reviewed his book back in January. I was awakened to the severity of his pain, heartbreak, addiction and longing for hope. I am deeply saddened to hear of his sudden passing. As I comment at the end of this post, I do hope that he gave his heart to the Lord during his quest for peace. This sadness is again another reminder life is short. eternity is forever and this is the day of salvation. Got Questions has a great post and video about how you can be saved today.
“Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.” (Isaiah 45:22)
Here is my review from my January 2023 monthly email before he passed
♥♥♥
Matthew Perry’s latest memoir is not for the faint of heart, on no, it is for those who want to deeply understand the depth of misery one walks when chained to things of the world that promise everything but simultaneously drain the life out of every ounce of your being. Prepare to be disturbed and awakened to the lure of fame, money, sex, drugs and unadulterated fun that exhausts the human spirit leaning close to the point of no return.
Perry has lived a life on the dark side with sparks of fire only God could ignite to recharge his mind, body and soul back to life. To the world, he had everything you could desire, yet here he is, somewhat alone today, with all the money he needs, a spectacular view of the ocean yet full of physical and emotional scars that will linger for years to come.
However, those scars are a daily reminder that he somehow made it out alive and has hope for tomorrow while sipping coffee with tears of gratitude in his eyes. Nothing fills you but Jesus. I believe in the depth of his experience; there is a glimmer of hope for Perry sizzling beneath the smouldering embers of heart-wrenching memories calling him to the other side of the fence that truly offers peace, joy and an eternity of pure love free from chains pronouncing darkness rules. Does he hear it? I don’t know. Only God does. My prayer for Matthew is that he hears that still, quiet voice calling him toward a life of awe-filled joy because of resting in the good news that Jesus saves, redeems and restores! That is my prayer. He can get there with continued support and love from family and friends; I believe it! We are never beyond His reach.

"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."

So sad to hear about Matthew Perry. Heartbreaking.
Appreciate your insights into his memoir and I plan now to read it.
This video testimony is a wonderful example of redemption and the power of Jesus in our lives. Thank you for sharing.
It is a hard memoir to read but really give insights into how he made attempts to make his life turn around. I love Ben Fuller’s music it is so impactful!
