PRAYER FOR OUR KIDS
Sandee Macgregor / January 16, 2024
This beautiful image of my five kids’ names in their birth order was a gift from my husband. It arrived in a small box and had to be assembled and wrapped around the frame, which made me full of anticipation and excitement as I watched it come together. We hung it up in our bedroom, and when I wake up every day, the first thing I see is the names of all my kids on their own sign. Each child will have their own path, unique and different from their siblings’, yet their lives will continue to intersect through the years, and they will always have a secure foundation here at home.
As moms, we want nothing more than for our kids to find their place. We want them to grow, make their way in the world, and lean on God to guide them (and us, of course, too, when needed!). It can be hard sometimes to watch them grow and change because it can feel like they’re moving away from us. I’ve found that in those moments of fear and anxiety, I must trust that He has a purpose for their lives and that He will turn our hearts from fear to gratitude for being able to watch them become unique and wonderful people.
Whenever I feel that anxiety on behalf of my kids creeping into my mind, I take a quiet moment to give it to God, and I pray for them. The picture on our bedroom wall reminds me of the most beautiful way to pray for them when I first rise in the morning, and it also reminds me of the immense ways in which my life has been blessed just by them being here.
One of my favourite ways to pray for my kids is by praying for one of them each day, according to age, starting on Mondays. It works well for my family because there are five kids! Of course, I pray for my entire family every day, but doing it this way works well because I can be more focused and intentional, dedicating a prayer every day to one of my kids and whatever is happening in their lives.
Their transitions from childhood to adulthood have been much faster than I anticipated, and I’m sure any mom with grown kids will tell you the same thing! It has also been very special to watch how conversations and interests change over the years as they grow and gain more wisdom. Recently, when I picked up my daughter from school, our conversation was delightful, the back-and-forth asking questions about one another’s days, just as I would do with a friend. I treasure those moments because every moment counts.
What works for your family? How do you pray for your kids!?
