The gift of prayer
Sandee Macgregor / July 14, 2020
Nineteen years ago a very dear friend gifted me this book, Praying the Scriptures for Your Children, By Jodie Berndt. It was right around the birth of my second child. I still have it with me to this day. I admit, it is the second copy as the original one was literally falling apart at the seams. I tend to hold onto books (sorry dear husband) but, I let the original copy go and purchased this one. This book joins me on my cozy chair I sit for quiet time, praying, reading and journaling. It also has been bedside to read before I sleep. During the early years of raising children and honestly, being completely exhausted and unable to find the words I wanted to pray, I would turn to the end of the chapter and just read it out loud or quietly in my head. The author has thematically organized the chapters and found scripture relevant to that particular theme to pray over your chidlren. She allows space to insert the name of the child in the Prayers You Can Use at the end of each chapter such as the verse from Joshua 1:9,
“Enable ___________ to be strong and courageous. Don’t let him get frightened or discouraged, but let him know that you will be with him wherever he goes.” (p. 240).
We are called to, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thess 5:16-1). With that in mind, this book allows you the opportunity to turn prayer into a meaningful conversation with God. He hears, He sees and He knows!
To go a step further, gathering mothers to pray would create a beautiful community, a time with the focus on your immediate family. This book would be a wonderful resource for any stage of your parenting journey. Scripture does not change, the stages of your child does. This book walks with you through themes such as: faith, character, safety, relationships and future. Be sure to check out the appendix, my favourite part. She introduces men and women of the Bible to encourage your prayers.
So to you my dear friend, thank you for the gift of this book. I treasure it, but more than that I treasure your friendship. Although we live in different cities we have kindred spirits that will always be present. Thank you for being a friend that prays. Be sure to find her at
http://blessedbeyondbelief-amy.blogspot.com/ You will be encouraged as she eloquently shares her heart and her love for Jesus!

"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."
