What the fridge tells me
Sandee Macgregor / November 13, 2020
Growing up, the front of our fridge was a unique home for tidbits of wisdom, photos of family and friends, bible verses, quotes and a collection of creative magnets. You could not help but absorb a truth that rang out loudly as the fridge was opened for a glass of milk or midnight snack. This placement may not have been a forced learning, quite the opposite, it was a way to speak truth without words. Often as mothers we talk way more than we want to and a great deal more than our kids want to hear. I battle that and have for many years. Can anyone relate? Visiting my mom and dad the other day was very timely. They needed some assistance with leaves in the yard so we came as a family to make light of the work! After we cleared the maple and birch leaves, we sat down for a refreshing glass of water and and I found myself in front of the fridge once again. I read over some quotes, “Friends are the pillars on your porch. Sometimes they hold you up, sometimes they lean on you, and sometimes it’s just enough to know that they are standing by” (Author unknown), “Cats are like potato chips, it’s hard to only have one.”
I laughed to myself and instantly was brought back to the days rushing in and out for school, activities or work and would often take notice of a new items added. I remember one quote (think this is how it goes anyway!) that has always resonated with me, “Forgiveness is the fragrance on the heel of those who crushed it.” Powerful! I don’t know who wrote that, don’t know where my mom or dad found it, but it stuck! It reminded me of the choice to forgive no matter what, even if I was crushed.
The challenge I have in front of me is actually quite fun and practical. What can I adorn my home with to impact my kids without words. I have done this a lot over the years, but there is always room for more quotes, pictures, bible verse on the fridge. What does your fridge say?
A wordless impact is worthy of our attention.
"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."
